Crabs, Boating, Sun and Storm...St. Michaels, Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay

8-14-16

A quintessential summer staycation must include water. Deep water. In our area that means the Chesapeake Bay. We are still exploring this new to us sensation. After all, I grew up in Texas (after 3 years in Hawaii). Hawaii...lots of water. Texas...not so much. Virginia...deep sea ports that not all roads lead to. However one day we stumbled upon one road that led us through...

...Annapolis, Maryland...

My husband and I did this once the year before. This time we had to find a day to bring the kids. Cracking crabs is a new venture for us all. We loved the waterside seating. Definitely a table nearest the water is a must. It is sort of reminiscent of the San Antonio River Walk, except that river is quite shallow. This river is quite deep. We definitely didn't want to tumble in so we conceded to not being too near the water. Also there are jelly fish in that water! I thought we left those behind in the Gulf of Mexico.

After lunch we took a boat ride on this boat. Loved the boat ride and the staff. Appreciated all the history the captain gave. Didn't appreciate the guests who had to talk over the narrator though. We paid plenty of money for ride, view and historical narration. They couldn't understand why I gave them my "teacher look" every time they got noisy over the speaker. (Oh, and these were elderly people too. The younger folk were much better behaved!) All the young folk even got a turn at the wheel...including my son!

The following are photos of the view during our boat ride...

I love all the water...all the inlets...all the charming homes...all the boats. I could definitely stay here on vacation...or have a summer home!

The kids and I wanted to stay longer but my husband really needed to get home (long drive) because he's up early to get to work (long drive) in the morning. Here are the photos on the way back to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Besides, if we left now we'd still be able to see the bay before the sun sets. Loved seeing all the waterways and boats from the road...

This just seemed the pinnacle of summer staycation for us. The rest of our staycations just seemed to be the sad goodbye to summer for another long and dreary 9 months...
